What are chip antennas?
Chip antennas are a particular type of antenna valued for their small footprint. They are most commonly integrated in circuit boards to radiate high frequency electromagnetic waves. They have a limited range, making them optimal for small devices such as cell phones and WiFi routers.
How to design a chip antenna?
A chip is actually only half the antenna design. The other half is the ground plane of the PCB. Similar to a monopole, a chip antenna's radiation pattern and tuning are directly related to the size and shape of the ground plane
How do RF chips work?
An RFID reader sends Radio Frequency (RF) signals via an antenna. The antenna radiates the RF energy, and it is absorbed by the RFID tag attached to a good or material. The tag uses the absorbed energy to “power up” and return data from the embedded chip.
Where should a chip antenna be placed?
Every antenna has a unique radiation pattern, which, among other factors, will determine where the optimum position of an antenna will be on a circuit board. Generally, the best place to position an antenna is along the long-side edge of a circuit board.
