MIMO Technology utilises Multipe input and Multiple Output antennas to maximise the signal link and data carring capacity of the wireless system.

Typically,WiFi(802.11n)2.4/5.8GHz systems or newer 4G LTE-A transceiver systems(eg, broadband wireless modems)have two antennas ports,and thus need a MIMO dual port antenna system to make use of this technology.

Should you use only one port, this will result in reduced data rates.
